Chizu Kumai (熊井 千津 Kumai Chizu) is an old lady who is seen asking Kei Kurono's the way to Hinode Station.

Plot[]

Onion Alien Mission Arc[]

Chizu repeatedly asks Kei Kurono who is reading a Weekly Young Jump magazine, how to get to Hinode Station, he first tells her that she can get from there because he wants to avoid an explanation but she returns to ask him confused once again. The second time he tells her to figure it out herself and not to rely on others.

Later Joichiro Nishi tells everyone that they are in a TV Show and that before they came to the Tokyo Room someone spoke to them which left them in a state of hypnosis, Kurono remembers her as the person who spoke to him.

Etymology[]

  • The name Chizu means "thousand" (千) (chi) and "haven, port, harbor, ferry" (津) (tsu/zu).
  • Chizu's surname Kumai means "bear" (熊) (kuma) and "well, mine shaft, pit" (井) (i).

Trivia[]

  • In the manga, Chizu was an inconsequential character that was never heard from or brought up again after the Onion Alien Mission. The anime increased her role dramatically, having her appear multiple times before Kei Kurono in-between missions, foreshadowing events during the later episodes of the series, including the last part of the finale.
    • This made her into somewhat of a messenger for Gantz.
